The SCM Blending Polishing Flap Disc is a coated abrasive designed for blending, finishing and light polishing of metal surfaces using a hand-held angle grinder. It consists of overlapping abrasive flaps bonded to a rigid backing plate and is intended primarily for weld dressing, surface blending on stainless and carbon steels, deburring and preparing surfaces for subsequent polishing or coating.

These flap discs are available with abrasive grains such as aluminium oxide, zirconia alumina or silicon carbide, and in grit ranges typically from 40 up to 240 to suit stock removal through to fine finishing. Backing plates are supplied in fibreglass‑reinforced phenolic or plastic, with both flat and conical profiles offered (commonly referenced as Type 27/Type 29 styles) to suit flush grinding or contour work. Mounting is by standard angle‑grinder spindles; UK stock commonly uses M14 thread, while 5/8"-11 UNC options are also available for international tool compatibility. Discs are manufactured under ISO quality systems and meet relevant EN/DIN safety requirements for coated abrasives.

In typical use the zirconia alumina variants give faster cut rates and longer life on stainless and mild steel, while silicon carbide grades are chosen for delicate aluminium work to reduce clogging. The construction controls heat build-up and limits surface discolouration on stainless steel, helping to preserve corrosion resistance and minimise rework. The flap arrangement produces a uniform finish as the disc wears, reducing the risk of gouging and giving consistent results from coarse blending to fine satin polishing.
