Surface conditioning discs are non-woven abrasive pads mounted for use on angle grinders and portable polishers, intended for blending, satin-finishing, cleaning and light deburring of metal and other substrates. Their primary use is to remove oxidation, paint flash and weld discolouration while producing a consistent, controlled surface finish without gouging the workpiece.

These discs are manufactured from nylon fibre web impregnated with abrasive grains such as aluminium oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia‑alumina or ceramic grain. They are offered in a range of densities (open for cleaning, medium for blending, dense for final finishing) and grit equivalents following FEPA P‑grading (typically from coarse P80 to fine P400). Discs for angle grinders are supplied in common diameters (75mm, 100mm, 115mm and 125mm) with centre holes to suit M14 threaded spindles or 22.23mm arbors where required; there are also variants for die grinders and rotary polishers. Users should always check the disc’s rated maximum RPM and match it to the tool speed; common operating speeds for 125mm discs are up to c.12,200 rpm depending on specification.

Surface conditioning discs are widely used across fabrication, stainless steel processing, shipbuilding, rail, food processing, automotive refinishing and general maintenance. They are particularly valuable where surface contamination must be minimised — for example finishing stainless steel without embedded ferrous particles — and for preparing surfaces prior to painting or coating.

Key benefits include consistent scratch patterns for predictable visual finishes, reduced heat generation compared with coarse grinding, and longer life when specified with zirconia or ceramic grains for heavy stock removal. The non‑woven construction reduces the risk of changing component geometry while delivering effective corrosion scale and paint removal. Compatibility is broad: discs work with standard angle grinders, right‑angle polishers and backer pads, and can be specified with quick‑change fitting systems or conventional flanges.

Duchy Fasteners stocks a comprehensive range of surface conditioning discs (including Tyrolit‑type variants) in multiple sizes, grit/density options and pack quantities from single items to boxes of 10, 25 and 50 to suit trade and industrial requirements.
