The Damp Detector is a handheld moisture meter designed to locate and quantify damp in building materials and timber. Its primary use is rapid, on-site detection of moisture ingress in plaster, brickwork, flooring and structural timber to help diagnose leaks, rising damp and drying progress during repair or refurbishment.

Technically this pin-type instrument uses two hardened stainless steel probes (AISI 304) for contact measurement and a microcontroller-driven circuit to display results on a backlit LCD with both a numeric readout and a bar graph. Typical measurement capability covers a wood moisture content range of 0–40% MC and a relative/surface moisture scale of 0–99. Resolution is 0.1% (wood) with an accuracy typically within ±1–2% depending on material density and calibration. The casing is flame-retardant ABS with a rubber overmould finish for impact resistance and secure grip; power is supplied by a standard 9V PP3 battery. As a handheld electrical measuring tool it is designed with consideration for common industry standards such as DIN 52183 for wood moisture measurement and electrical safety principles of IEC 61010‑1, with EMC performance in line with EN 61326 where applicable.

Typical applications are in construction, roofing, property maintenance, joinery, flooring installation and heritage conservation where quick, non-destructive moisture checks are required. Builders and surveyors use the detector to identify wet patches behind plaster and behind skirting, to check drying after plastering or tanking, and to assess timber for rot risk before decoration or structural work. The stainless probes offer good corrosion resistance for repeated site use, while the robust ABS/rubber enclosure withstands the knocks of daily trade use.
