The files are manufactured from hardened high-carbon tool steel, heat-treated to a typical hardness range of approximately 58–62 HRC to retain cutting edges and resist premature wear. The working faces are knapped and rasped in three common cuts — coarse (bastard), second/medium cut and smooth (fine) — giving progressive stock removal rates and surface finish. The files have a single safe edge along the back where required for controlled filing close to shoulders. Handles are soft-grip thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) moulded over the tang, providing a non-slip grip, reduced vibration transfer and a comfortable handhold for extended use; the handles are compatible with standard tang dimensions for replacement if necessary.

Profiles and sizes follow the widely accepted proportions for engineer’s files used across industry (consistent with BS/DIN/ISO engineer’s file form factors), making these tools interchangeable with existing benches and templates. There are no threads, heads or drives on hand files; the tang-and-handle arrangement conforms to standard workshop practice.
